Occupational Therapy

Palm Tree Clinic’s therapy programme is developed and facilitated by a team of therapists who are passionate about emotional wellbeing. We have experience in clinical and academic settings and we use our programme to share therapeutic methods that we believe facilitate healing. Within the groups we aim to provide a supportive space for expression in order to promote personal growth and sustained recovery. Our focus is strongly on self-awareness, experiential learning and practical life skills, to encourage members to integrate skills, to give feedback and then to explore further insights.

The programme provides an opportunity for group members to change through positive group processes including cohesion, bonding and validation. Within this safe space, individuals have an opportunity to share their feelings as well as to explore the induction of new behaviors and thoughts. Inevitably this process provides the individuals with the opportunity to regain control of their own life and their recovery. The programme includes various therapeutic strategies including CBT and DBT that complement each other and combine for an integrated experience. The groups are structured using evidence-based practices and delivered in a clinically coordinated manner as a comprehensive programme.

The groups are facilitated using various training approaches. These provide an experiential way of learning and a skills acquisition process follows. This involves gaining awareness of skills difficulties, analysing skills, practising skills and applying newly acquired skills. An interactive style of learning is encouraged with group members contributing their own skills, experiences and knowledge to the group, creating a supportive environment for growth.

PROGRAMME REFERRAL PROCESS:

Palm Tree Clinic’s therapy programme is presented over a 3-week cycle. A blanket referral for group therapy is in place, with patients not ready for participation being specifically excluded by the treating psychiatrist. Each patient is individually orientated to the programme and during this time, specific treatment goals are formulated. Individual follow-up takes place during their admission to reassess these goals with a discharge plan being formulated when necessary. Formal assessments are also completed if required for medical or work purposes.

For our bipolar patients, principles of the Barcelona Model of treatment are introduced on an individual basis, supporting their input from the structured therapy programme. Our high care patients who may be too low functioning for the structured therapy programme, are seen individually or in a specific group with members of a similar function level where appropriate activities are utilised to assess, maintain or improve function levels.

As a facility, we like to encourage a culture of growth and healing. We therefore encourage all patients to participate in the therapy programme while under admission. We certainly support those patients who are initially very wary of the group space but know that the sense of belonging, group sharing and learning, is an integral part of patient healing.
