Dr Kumarie Moodliar

Dr K Moodliar qualified from the Walter Sisulu University in 2002. Originally from Durban, Kwazulu Natal, she decided to do her internship at Grooteschuur Hospital. After her internship, Dr Moodliar was sent to Mitchell’s Plain to complete her community service year. It was during this year and her exposure to intense trauma, poverty and consequent mental stress /illness, that she developed an interest in community psychiatry. She thereafter got a job as a medical officer in psychiatry at Karl Bremer Hospital, where she was able to practice community psychiatry at a multitude of day hospitals throughout the Western Cape.

Her 2 years in this post allowed her to gain valuable exposure in general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. Due to her passion for the field, and with the support of her consultant/professors, Dr Moodliar applied for and successfully got a registrar/specialist training post in psychiatry at the University of Stellenbosch for the next 4 years. Her registrarship allowed her to rotate through different hospitals, namely? Tygerberg Hospital, Lentegeur Hospital & Stikland Hospital.

Dr Moodliar started in private practice in January 2011 at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital. Her continued passion for psychiatry together with her clinical experience, motivated Dr Moodliar to advance in her studies, as she took a special interest in Addiction care (substance disorders, eating disorder, gambling disorders, etc.). She has since qualified cum laude in her 2 year post-doctoral diploma in addiction care at the University of Stellenbosch. This has contributed significantly to the standard of care that Dr Moodliar is able to give to her patients. Dr Moodliar currently has her primary practice based at Netcare Blaauwberg hospital, and works as a consultant psychiatrist at Palm Tree Clinic.
